Student Group Social Event Guidance

December 1, 2021

Hello Undergraduate and Graduate Student Organizations,

Due to the recent emergence of the Omicron COVID-19 variant and rise in our campus positivity rate, the Public Health Guidance for the campus community has been updated to include social events being planned by student organizations. Social events include parties, formals, and spaces where alcohol is present.

Our collective goal is to ensure that all students are able to complete their Fall semester safely and with as little disruption as possible.  As such, we strongly encourage that all student organizations postpone social events as of today, Wednesday, December 1st.

In preparation for finals week, this week is the last week for student organizations to register social events for the Fall ’21 semester. The event registration form will close on Friday, December 3rd, as planned.

Please be aware that we are continuously monitoring case counts, and that should we detect widespread transmission or large clusters associated with these events, we may be forced to cancel events as advised by the University’s public health team.

If you are unsure if this guidance applies to planned social events within your student group, you can consult with the Office of Student Affairs and/or the Covid Resource Call Center.

A few additional reminders:

  • All students, faculty, staff, and postdocs are strongly encouraged to take part in screening testing immediately upon their return – especially those who have travelled or attended large social gatherings over the Thanksgiving break. Our COVID-19 positivity rate on campus and in our surrounding communities has increased over the last week, and early detection will allow us to avoid additional widespread positivity on campus. Schedule your COVID-19 screening test by visiting covidscheduling.upenn.edu.
  • Please continue to complete daily symptom checks through PennOpen Pass and stay home if we have any symptoms. Continued masking and limited social gathering remain our most effective tools to minimize transmission. Additionally, Penn is planning a vaccine booster clinic in the coming weeks, and more information is forthcoming.
  • All students must continue to participate in required screening testing. To avoid a Red Pass for non-compliance on December 14, all undergraduate and graduate students must test during the time period of November 28 through December 11.

Together, we have the ability to make thoughtful choices as we head into the final weeks of the semester and into a much deserved winter break. The decisions we make today can help us avoid outcomes such as having to quarantine due to exposure, delaying or limiting travel during the break, and disrupting our end of semester academic activities. We are so thankful for your patience and cooperation as we care for one another and our community.
